In April 2008 I began blogging in earnest. A natural writer since I was in grade school, but one who hadn't published a lot, I found the free and easy form of blogging to be just the right recipe for my writing to emerge. I have about a dozen blogs on a variety of subjects.

Newsletters
My first newsletter was called The China Hand and reported on the Chinese programs led by the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I conceived of it, gathered content for it, published it, mailed it out and even raised funds for it.
In the early 2000s, while working at SAS Institute in a marketing communications role, I was invited to start a division newsletter that was published weekly for about a year and a half. The newsletter was well-received and subscriptions started coming in from employees around the world and in other divisions.
It is my opinion that most of us are inundated with information, so I would not recommend a newsletter to a client. However, I would recommend using a contact management system, like Constant Contact, to allow customers to OPT IN to your email list, and to send out attractive emails, albeit short ones.
